Background of the study
WhatsApp has become an integral communication tool among Nigerian youth, fostering a digital space where language continuously evolves. The platform’s informal chat environment encourages users to experiment with semantics, often leading to innovative expressions and reinterpretations of traditional meanings (Adewale, 2023). Youth interactions on WhatsApp reflect a dynamic interplay between standard language and emerging digital jargon, resulting in noticeable semantic shifts that mirror contemporary cultural trends. This study examines how the use of emojis, abbreviations, and localized slang in WhatsApp chats contributes to a broader semantic transformation within Nigerian youth culture (Ike, 2024). The research delves into the mechanisms by which digital communication facilitates the redefinition of word meanings and the creation of new linguistic constructs, thereby influencing everyday language use (Omolara, 2023). Such semantic shifts have significant implications for understanding the fluid nature of language in the digital age, as they highlight the impact of technology on language evolution and cultural expression. The study further explores the socio-cultural factors that drive these changes, providing a nuanced understanding of the interplay between digital media and youth language practices (Umar, 2024).

Statement of the problem
There is limited scholarly attention to the semantic shifts occurring within WhatsApp chat language among Nigerian youth. Although informal digital communication is recognized as a catalyst for language change, its specific impact on the meaning and usage of words remains under-investigated (Babatunde, 2023). This research aims to address the gap by examining how WhatsApp interactions contribute to semantic evolution, highlighting the challenges of deciphering meaning in a rapidly changing linguistic landscape. The study seeks to uncover the underlying factors that influence these shifts and the implications for broader language use among the youth (Chinaza, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the nature of semantic shifts in Nigerian youth WhatsApp communications.
  2. To compare the usage of digital jargon and localized slang in influencing word meanings.
  3. To identify socio-cultural factors driving semantic change in WhatsApp chat language.

Research questions

  1. How do WhatsApp chats contribute to semantic shifts among Nigerian youth?
  2. What role do emojis and abbreviations play in redefining word meanings?
  3. Which socio-cultural factors most significantly influence these semantic changes?

Significance of the study
The study is significant as it unpacks the evolving nature of language among Nigerian youth in digital environments, particularly on WhatsApp. The findings will provide valuable insights into the interplay between technology and language, enhancing our understanding of semantic change. This research will benefit educators, linguists, and communication specialists by offering new perspectives on digital language practices and their cultural implications (Afolabi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This research focuses on WhatsApp chat language among Nigerian youth, examining semantic shifts exclusively within this context. It is limited to online textual communication and does not encompass other digital or face-to-face interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Semantic Shift: The evolution of word meanings over time.
  • WhatsApp Chat: Real-time text-based communication on the WhatsApp platform.
  • Digital Jargon: Specialized language or slang that develops within online communities.
